The orange-fleshed melon which South Africans call “spanspek”, is actually known in the rest of the world as cantaloupes, and is named after the papal garden of Cantaloupe, Italy where it was cultivated in the sixteenth century. However, the history of cantaloupes dates back to Biblical times, around 2400 B.C., when it was a popular fruit in the East.
